The world of FPGA consoles is steadily growing. More and more companies are choosing to launch consoles of this type, which emulate the characteristics of old systems through hardware. This provides an experience much closer to the original systems than software-based emulations. Previously, we published an article about two of these devices aimed at reviving classic SEGA systems. Today, we bring you news that will delight Nintendo fans.
Analogue 3D: A Nintendo 64 with Native 4K Resolution
Analogue is a company specialized in creating FPGA consoles to enjoy games from various retro systems. They have already launched versions for the Game Boy, Mega Drive, Super Nintendo, NES, and PC Engine. Recently, they announced their new project, a hardware system that perfectly emulates the iconic Nintendo 64, introducing some very interesting new features.
General Features of the Analogue 3D
This device retains the aesthetics of the original console but with a more minimalist design. It will be available in two colors, black and white, both of which look stunning. It is capable of running original cartridges from any region and features four ports for original Nintendo 64 controllers. Additionally, it has two USB ports that can be used to charge modern controllers or to use them wired. It also includes Bluetooth for wireless controllers.
To recreate the warmth and brightness of old CRT TVs on modern screens, the device features a series of meticulously designed filters that efficiently simulate the original experience. This is more than just upscaling; it aims to deliver an experience as close to the original as possible.
It also comes with its own operating system, which keeps your game collection organized with their respective configurations, screenshots, and save data. These are stored within the system itself, enabling you to save progress even on cartridges with dead batteries. Thanks to its dual-band Wi-Fi capabilities, you can not only keep the operating system updated but also enjoy online gaming sessions.

Is It Worth the Investment? What You Should Know Before Buying
Whether or not this console is worth the investment is a personal decision that will depend on several factors, including your preferences, financial situation, and intended use. This product is aimed at collectors, not the general public. Right from the start, the system can run original cartridges but does not support backup copies of games. Forget about downloading ROMs from the internet to play on this console.
Another consideration is that the original price does not include a controller. While this may seem like a drawback, it actually helps lower the upfront cost. Most buyers likely still have their original controllers. You can also add a special controller made by 8BitDo (a name synonymous with quality) for an additional $40 or invest in purchasing original controllers if you don’t already have one.
Regarding the price, it’s not unreasonable. Considering how difficult it is to find a working Nintendo 64 for less than €70, you’d also need a Scan Converter to use it with modern displays. These devices, which convert video signals to modern resolutions, aren’t cheap. High-quality ones start at around €140 and can exceed €300. And even then, you’d only get Full HD output, not 4K. From this perspective, Analogue’s console is a better value.
A key factor is the type of screen you plan to use. This console is designed for 4K TVs and monitors. While it can be used with lower-resolution displays, the manufacturers don’t recommend it. When capturing gameplay, you can do so with a 4K capture device but not in the original resolution.
Final Thoughts
Analogue 3D is a high-quality product designed to satisfy collectors and enthusiasts who want the closest possible experience to the original, updated to suit modern times. This is not a cheap emulation console like the ones flooding AliExpress, which often provide poor results when running Nintendo 64 games. If you’re one of the lucky few who still have a functioning original console and a CRT TV or monitor, this investment may not be necessary. After all, you don’t need to replicate the original experience if you can already enjoy it firsthand. Unless, of course, you want to play on a modern, large screen or record your gameplay in the highest resolution possible.
