SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos Launches on Modern Platforms

One of the greatest rivalries of all time has undoubtedly been between SNK and Capcom, with both companies being undisputed leaders in the fighting game genre. However, despite being direct competitors, time and the goodwill of some of their key figures led to a collaboration that remains cherished by players to this day. At the end of the last century, both companies reached an agreement to produce a series of crossovers in which each would develop games featuring characters from both developers. This is how, in 1999, SNK released on its portable console, the Neo Geo Pocket Color, SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighter’s Clash and SNK vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millennium, with the former being a card game and the latter a fighting game. Capcom, on the other hand, launched Capcom vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000 the following year for the SEGA NAOMI arcade system, which was later ported to the Dreamcast, with an enhanced version reaching the PlayStation.

In 2001, a second installment titled Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium was released, also originally for NAOMI, which was later ported to Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube. Both games were well-received by players, who had to wait until 2003 to try SNK‘s version of this crossover, SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos. This title was originally released for Neo Geo, both in home and arcade versions, and was later ported to PS2 and Xbox. Interestingly, this fighting game features one-on-one combat without the ability to create teams, a feature present in Capcom’s versions, which may have been a significant reason why it wasn’t as positively received as its counterpart. Regardless of which version we choose, all offered excellent options that allowed us to fulfill the dream we had for years—to see the best fighters from the two Osaka giants face off.

What’s new in the latest version of SNK vs. Capcom?

We had to wait over 20 years to enjoy this title again. SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos is now available on PC via GOG and Steam, as well as on consoles like PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, priced at €20 on all platforms. This new version includes the innovative rollback netcode system for smoother online matches, as well as a tournament mode, online lobbies, a hitbox viewer, a gallery featuring 89 items, and offers the ability to play as Athena and Red Arremer from the start. These two characters were hidden in the arcade version.
