Last Thursday, December 12<\/strong>, the 10th edition of The Game Awards<\/strong> took place, once again hosted by its creator, Canadian journalist Geoff Keighley<\/strong>. During the more than 3-hour event<\/strong>, in addition to awarding prizes and listening to the winners\u2019 speeches, several trailers for new projects were presented, as well as a good number of advertisements.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Event Summary – Who Won and Lost at The Game Awards 2024?<\/h3>

Before breaking down the categories and their winners, I\u2019ll provide a brief summary of who I believe came out as winners and losers of the event. It\u2019s worth mentioning that these are personal opinions, and being nominated\u2014even without winning\u2014is still a positive achievement worthy of recognition.<\/p>

It could be said that the big winner of the night was Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was the studio with the highest number of nominated games, with six in total, receiving 16 nominations and taking home six awards. Among all the games at the event, the standout was\u00a0Astro Bot<\/em>, which had the most nominations (seven) and also the most wins, with four awards.<\/p>

Regarding independent studios, the standout was\u00a0Balatro<\/em>, which received five nominations and won three awards, placing it among the most nominated and winning games of this edition.<\/p>

Returning to AAA studios, SEGA had a spectacular evening, securing nine nominations across three of its games and winning three awards, all thanks to\u00a0Metaphor: ReFantazio<\/em>. However, I personally feel two of these awards were undeserved, potentially reflecting some bias from the judges.<\/p>

Calling those who were nominated but didn\u2019t win \u201closers\u201d is just a figure of speech. Being selected from among the thousands of games released this year is already a significant accomplishment. That said, the following companies could be seen as those who didn’t fare well.<\/p>

Nintendo didn\u2019t secure any awards with its four nominations. The same situation applied to Capcom. EA only managed to win in one category. Microsoft\u2019s Xbox division was disappointing, with 11 nominations across four games but only one award. Similarly, Square Enix received 11 nominations for three games but took home just one prize.<\/p>

If I had to name the biggest losers of the event, I would point to Konami and Bloober Team. Their brilliant remake of\u00a0Silent Hill 2<\/em>\u00a0earned five nominations but won none. The most disappointing loss was in the \u201cBest Narrative\u201d category, where it lost to a rival whose story doesn\u2019t come close to measuring up.<\/p>

All the Winners in Each Category at The Game Awards 2024<\/h3>

Best Fighting Game<\/h4>

Tekken 8\u00a0<\/strong>won Best Fighting Game, beating out\u00a0Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero<\/em>,\u00a0Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising<\/em>,\u00a0Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics<\/em>, and\u00a0Multiversus<\/em>.<\/p>

Best VR\/AR Game<\/h4>

Batman: Arkham Shadow<\/strong>\u00a0took home the award for Best VR\/AR Game, surpassing\u00a0Arizona Sunshine Remake<\/em>,\u00a0Asgard\u2019s Wrath 2<\/em>,\u00a0Metal: Hellinger VR<\/em>, and one of the clear favorites,\u00a0Metro Awakening<\/em>.<\/p>

Best eSports Game<\/h4>

The legendary MOBA\u00a0League of Legends<\/strong>\u00a0by Riot Games won Best eSports Game again, defeating two powerhouses from Valve,\u00a0Counter-Strike 2<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0DOTA 2<\/em>, as well as\u00a0Mobile Legends: Bang Bang<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Valorant<\/em>\u00a0(another Riot title).<\/p>

Best eSports Athlete<\/h4>

Faker<\/strong>, the world\u2019s most famous\u00a0League of Legends<\/em>\u00a0player, earned the award, beating out 33, Alexby, Chovy, Zywoo, and Zmjjkk.<\/p>

Best eSports Team<\/h4>

T1<\/strong>\u00a0won Best eSports Team, surpassing Bilibili Gaming, Gen.G, Navi, and Team Liquid. Essentially, Riot Games triumphed in all eSports-related categories this year\u2014not just for the game of the year, but also the best player and team, all centered around\u00a0League of Legends<\/em>.<\/p>

Games for Impact<\/h4>

This category honors the best games with positive social messages. The winner was\u00a0Neva<\/strong>, developed by the excellent Spanish studio Nomada Studio and published by none other than Devolver Digital. The other nominees were\u00a0Closer the Distance<\/em>,\u00a0Indika<\/em>,\u00a0Life is Strange: Double Exposure<\/em>,\u00a0Senua\u2019s Saga: Hellblade II<\/em>, and\u00a0Tales of Kenzera: Zau<\/em>.<\/p>

Innovation in Accessibility<\/h4>

Ubisoft took the award with its brilliant Metroidvania\u00a0Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown<\/strong>. It triumphed over\u00a0Star Wars Outlaws<\/em>, Xbox Game Studios\u2019 entries\u00a0Call of Duty: Black Ops 6<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Diablo IV<\/em>, and EA\/BioWare\u2019s\u00a0Dragon Age: The Veilguard<\/em>.<\/p>

Best Family Game<\/h4>

The last pre-show award was the first of the night for\u00a0Astro Bot<\/strong>, which beat out several Nintendo titles including\u00a0Princess Peach Showtime!<\/em>,\u00a0Super Mario Party Jamboree<\/em>,\u00a0The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom<\/em>, and the indie game\u00a0The Plucky Squire<\/em>.<\/p>

Best Performance<\/h4>

This award celebrates the best actors who voice characters we love. Once again, Melina Juergens<\/strong> won for her role in\u00a0Senua\u2019s Saga: Hellblade II<\/strong>, just as she did for the first game. Other nominees included Briana White (Final Fantasy VII Rebirth<\/em>), Hannah Telle (Life is Strange: Double Exposure<\/em>), Humberly Gonz\u00e1lez (Star Wars Outlaws<\/em>), and Like Roberts (Silent Hill 2<\/em>).<\/p>

Best Action Game<\/h4>

Chinese studio Game Science made history by becoming the first from their country to win an award, taking Best Action Game with\u00a0Black Myth Wukong<\/strong>. It triumphed over true genre gems such as\u00a0Call of Duty: Black Ops 6<\/em>,\u00a0Helldivers 2<\/em>,\u00a0Stellar Blade<\/em>, and\u00a0WarHammer 40,000: Space Marines 2<\/em>.<\/p>

The Game Awards Game Changer<\/h4>

For the first time in the event\u2019s history, an award was presented to someone who contributed to the industry without necessarily developing games. The winner was Amir Salvat<\/strong>, who created a database to help industry workers find jobs. This nonprofit project has already helped over 3,000 people secure employment in its short lifetime.<\/p>

Most Anticipated Game<\/h4>

Unsurprisingly, the award for Most Anticipated Game went to\u00a0GTA VI,<\/strong> beating out\u00a0Death Stranding 2: On the Beach<\/em>,\u00a0Ghost of Yotei<\/em>,\u00a0Metroid Prime 4: Beyond<\/em>, and\u00a0Monster Hunter Wilds<\/em>. Each of these games is highly anticipated, but whenever Rockstar launches a new\u00a0GTA<\/em>\u00a0installment, the entire industry holds its breath.<\/p>

Best Multiplayer Game<\/h4>

Helldivers 2<\/strong>\u00a0was crowned Best Multiplayer Game, beating the hugely popular\u00a0Call of Duty: Black Ops 6<\/em>\u00a0and other competitors such as\u00a0Super Mario Party Jamboree<\/em>,\u00a0Tekken 8<\/em>, and\u00a0Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2<\/em>.<\/p>

Best Community Support<\/h4>

Last year\u2019s Game of the Year,\u00a0Baldur\u2019s Gate 3<\/strong>, won Best Community Support at this year\u2019s edition. It triumphed over formidable contenders like\u00a0Final Fantasy XIV<\/em>,\u00a0Fortnite<\/em>,\u00a0Helldivers 2<\/em>, and\u00a0No Man\u2019s Sky<\/em>.<\/p>

Best Art Direction<\/h4>

Up to this point, the night had gone smoothly, but the Best Art Direction category delivered what I consider the event\u2019s first and biggest injustice, with\u00a0Metamorph ReFantazio<\/strong>\u00a0winning over\u00a0Neva<\/em>.<\/p>

I don\u2019t want this to be misunderstood. Atlus and SEGA\u2019s game has top-tier artistic design. However, it remains an anime-style game using cel shading that, while visually impressive, doesn\u2019t hold a candle to\u00a0Neva<\/em>. This indie title boasts a much more artistic and revolutionary visual style. It\u2019s a true masterpiece. Unfortunately, it seems fan service prevailed here; popularity outweighed merit for this unnecessary win.<\/p>

Other nominees included\u00a0Astro Bot<\/em>,\u00a0Black Myth Wukong<\/em>, and\u00a0Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree<\/em>, all deserving of their nominations.<\/p>

Best Game Direction<\/h4>

The great Hideo Kojima made an appearance to present the award for Best Game Direction, which went to Team Asobi<\/strong> and Sony Interactive Entertainment<\/strong> for the brilliant platformer\u00a0Astro Bot<\/strong>. The other nominees were\u00a0Balatro<\/em>,\u00a0Black Myth Wukong<\/em>,\u00a0Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree<\/em>,\u00a0Final Fantasy VII Rebirth<\/em>, and\u00a0Metamorph ReFantazio<\/em>.<\/p>

Best Indie Debut<\/h4>

The creators of\u00a0Shovel Knight<\/em>, previous winners of this award, announced this year\u2019s winner, which was none other than\u00a0Balatro<\/strong>. It triumphed over\u00a0Animal Well<\/em>,\u00a0Manor Lords<\/em>,\u00a0Pacific Drive<\/em>, and\u00a0The Plucky Squire<\/em>, all superb indie games.<\/p>

Best Action\/Adventure Game<\/h4>

Astro Bot<\/strong>\u00a0claimed another award, this time for Best Action\/Adventure Game. It beat out\u00a0Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Star Wars Outlaws<\/em>\u00a0from Ubisoft,\u00a0The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom<\/em>\u00a0from Nintendo, and Konami\u2019s excellent\u00a0Silent Hill 2<\/em>\u00a0remake.<\/p>

Best RPG<\/h4>

The award for Best RPG went to\u00a0Metamorph ReFantazio<\/strong>, surpassing\u00a0Dragon\u2019s Dogma 2<\/em>,\u00a0Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree<\/em>,\u00a0Final Fantasy VII Rebirth<\/em>, and\u00a0Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth<\/em>.<\/p>

Best Sports\/Racing Game<\/h4>

EA Sports FC 25<\/strong>\u00a0claimed this category, which was dominated by titles from EA and 2K. The other nominees were\u00a0F1 24<\/em>,\u00a0NBA 2K25<\/em>,\u00a0Top Spin 2K25<\/em>, and\u00a0WWE 2K24<\/em>.<\/p>

Best Sim\/Strategy Game<\/h4>

Frostpunk 2<\/strong>\u00a0won the award, defeating\u00a0Age of Mythology Retold<\/em>,\u00a0Kunitsu-Gami Path of the Goddess<\/em>,\u00a0Manor Lords<\/em>, and\u00a0Unicorn Overlord<\/em>.<\/p>

Best Ongoing Game<\/h4>

Another award went to the brilliant\u00a0Helldivers 2<\/strong>, which surpassed\u00a0Destiny 2<\/em>,\u00a0Diablo IV<\/em>,\u00a0Final Fantasy XIV<\/em>, and\u00a0Fortnite<\/em>.<\/p>

Best Adaptation<\/h4>

With the rise of successful series based on video game licenses, this became one of the most anticipated categories. Ultimately, the award went to the series\u00a0Fallout<\/strong>, which triumphed over\u00a0Arcane<\/em>,\u00a0Knuckles<\/em>,\u00a0Like a Dragon Yakuza<\/em>, and\u00a0Tomb Raider The Legend of Lara Croft<\/em>.<\/p>

Ella Purnell, who plays Luci, director Jonathan Nolan, and, of course, Todd Howard, who enjoys giving speeches whenever possible, went on stage to receive the award.<\/p>

Best Score and Music<\/h4>

A highly contested category with top-tier nominees, the award went to\u00a0Final Fantasy VII Rebirth<\/strong>, beating\u00a0Astro Bot<\/em>,\u00a0Metamorph ReFantazio<\/em>,\u00a0Silent Hill 2<\/em>, and\u00a0Stellar Blade<\/em>.<\/p>

Best Indie Game<\/h4>

Once again,\u00a0Balatro\u00a0<\/strong>emerged victorious, cementing it as one of the most awarded titles of this edition across indie and AAA categories alike. The other nominees included\u00a0Animal Well<\/em>,\u00a0Lorelei and the Laser Eyes<\/em>,\u00a0Neva<\/em>, and\u00a0UFO 50<\/em>.<\/p>

Best Audio Design<\/h4>

Another award for Ninja Theory and\u00a0Senua\u2019s Saga Hellblade 2<\/strong>, this time in the Best Audio Design category. It triumphed over\u00a0Astro Bot<\/em>,\u00a0Call of Duty Black Ops 6<\/em>,\u00a0Final Fantasy VII Rebirth<\/em>, and\u00a0Silent Hill 2<\/em>.<\/p>

Players\u2019 Voice Award<\/h4>

This award is entirely based on public voting. After the nominees were revealed, the internet exploded with controversy, claiming the voting process became a popularity contest rather than an honest selection. The inclusion of\u00a0Black Myth Wukong<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Elden Ring<\/em>\u00a0was uncontroversial, but the rest of the nominees were gacha games lacking notable merit.<\/p>

Ultimately,\u00a0Black Myth Wukong\u00a0<\/strong>claimed victory, earning the Chinese studio its second award. It defeated\u00a0Elden Ring<\/em>,\u00a0Genshin Impact<\/em>,\u00a0Wuthering Waves<\/em>, and\u00a0Zenless Zone Zero<\/em>.<\/p>

Best Narrative<\/h4>

For the Best Narrative award, industry legend Sam Lake<\/strong> made an appearance, delivering a fantastic black-and-white introduction with his iconic voiceover. Seeing Sam is always a pleasure, but even his charm couldn\u2019t soften the disappointment of who won.\u00a0Metamorph ReFantazio<\/strong>\u00a0once again claimed a title it didn\u2019t deserve.<\/p>

I don\u2019t know the judges\u2019 criteria, but for them to consider this game superior in storytelling to\u00a0Final Fantasy VII Rebirth<\/em>,\u00a0Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth<\/em>, and especially\u00a0Senua\u2019s Saga Hellblade 2<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Silent Hill 2<\/em>, feels like a real travesty.<\/p>

This isn\u2019t to say that\u00a0Metamorph<\/em>\u00a0has a bad narrative; it simply pales in comparison. Its storylines are far below\u00a0Silent Hill 2<\/em>, universally hailed as a cult classic, and\u00a0Hellblade 2<\/em>, a pure narrative experience. This was a completely unjust decision by the jury.<\/p>

Once again, quantity trumped quality. It doesn\u2019t matter if the story lasts a thousand hours; what matters is the emotions conveyed. None of this seemed to resonate with a jury that valued a massive anime-style adventure over true masterpieces of storytelling.<\/p>

Game of the Year<\/h4>

The final award of the night, as always, was Game of the Year. Here, at least beyond personal opinions, a worthy winner emerged. Unsurprisingly,\u00a0Astro Bot<\/strong>, which tallied the most awards of the night, took the title. It beat out\u00a0Metamorph ReFantazio<\/em>,\u00a0Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree<\/em>,\u00a0Balatro<\/em>,\u00a0Black Myth Wukong<\/em>, and\u00a0Final Fantasy VII Rebirth<\/em>.<\/p>

This victory highlights platformer games, a genre often overshadowed by the mainstream but still capable of delighting audiences of all ages. During Team Asobi’s acceptance speech, they fittingly gave thanks to\u00a0Super Mario Bros.<\/em>\u00a0and made a nod to Nintendo and all the companies that have helped platformers evolve as a genre over the years. These games, once giants, are now being revitalized by modern titles.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
